International Nurses Day | Nursing the World to Health
On May 12th, we celebrate International Nurses Day.
This year the celebration is extra special as 2020 is Year of the Nurse and Midwife and the 200th anniversary of nursing pioneer, Florence Nightingale’s birth.
Nurse Day was first proposed in 1953 by Dorothy Sutherland, an officer from the U.S. Branch of Health, Education and Welfare. He wanted to recognize nurses for all their sacrifice and contribution to the healthcare sector. President Dwight D. Eisenhower followed by announcing the day should be observed nationwide. In 1965, the International Council of Nurses were the first to celebrate, making the event universal.
In January 1974, the International Council of Nurses selected May 12th as International Nurses Day in honor of Florence Nightingale and nurses around the world.
Nurses around the world play a critical role in providing care, treatment, disease prevention and health promotion. They work endlessly and are recognized for their invaluable contribution to the medical sector.
So today and every day, thank you to all 20.7M nurses and midwives in the world for loving and dedicating your life to helping others.
Happy #InternationalNursesDay
